Unboxing a Bed in a Box
Rather than getting an unpackaged mattress that’s hard to move around, you receive it neatly packed into a box. This makes delivery easier, though a lot of people still worry about bed in a bed-in-a-box unboxing. How difficult is this - and what are the steps involved? We’ll explain everything in this guide so you know exactly how to unbox your bed and why it could be the perfect solution for you.
Step-by-Step Guide to Bed in a Box Unboxing
Let’s jump straight into what happens after you order a mattress in a box. You’ll receive the delivery details, and when the delivery day finally arrives, your courier will present a box to you. This box can vary in size depending on the mattress you choose - for context, our 12-inch Memory Foam Hybrid Essential Medium Firm Mattress for a Twin bed is packed in a 16 x 16 x 40-inch box.
At this stage, you’ve got your bed in a box, and now you can follow these steps to unbox it and get it ready for sleeping:
Step 1: Move The Box To Your Bedroom
Take the box and move it to whichever room it will go in. If you have to take it upstairs, then the courier may assist you with this - if they can’t, then be sure to move the box with at least one other person to avoid injuring yourself.
Step 2: Remove The Mattress From The Box
Now that you’re in the correct room, you can remove the mattress from the box. You’ll notice it’s in plastic packaging and rolled up very tightly. This helps it fit in the box - and the packaging is vacuum-packed to prevent it from expanding and bursting through the box.
It’s always best to remove the mattress once it's in the bedroom; otherwise, it’s harder to maneuver. If you open the box downstairs, then you’re effectively carrying a mattress to the bedroom, so it’s not that different from a traditional bed delivery.
Move the cardboard box out of the way and move on to step three.
Step 3: Unfurl & Cut Open Your Mattress
Start unfurling your mattress (in its packaging) onto your bed. When it’s laid flat, you can use the provided opener to careful cut away the vacuum packaging. You may hear a slight hiss as air is released - and you should also see that your mattress starts expanding immediately.
Pull away and discard the packaging, which will leave you with a nice new mattress on your bed frame.
Step 4: Let The Mattress Expand
While the mattress will start expanding from the moment you cut away the packaging, it can take up to 48 hours for it to achieve its final form. The reason for this is that vacuum packing a mattress means it shrinks down slightly. Again, this makes it super easy to deliver the mattress in a box for your convenience. You need to open it up and let it breathe to expand to its true form.
As a general rule, you should wait 24 hours before sleeping on your mattress, though we understand this isn’t always possible. There’s nothing “wrong” with sleeping on it before then, just be aware that it may not be as firm as you expect just yet.
It’s also advised that you open the windows and keep the room ventilated as the mattress expands. There will be a slight odor, but that’s completely natural and happens because the mattress is freshly made and immediately vacuum sealed. Let it air out for as long as possible, and the scent will subside.
Step 5: Enjoy Your Mattress
After letting your mattress expand, you can lie on it and enjoy a good night’s sleep. Keep in mind that all of our mattresses come with a 101-Night Sleep Trial, so you can send yours back if you don’t like the way it feels.
How Easy Is The Unboxing Process?
As you can see, the unboxing process only involves five very simple steps - and one of them is enjoying your mattress once it’s ready! It’s an extremely stress-free process that’s the direct opposite of what you go through when accepting an unboxed mattress delivery.
If you’re putting the mattress in a downstairs bedroom, then you can basically handle the entire unboxing process on your own - it’s truly that straightforward.
You will need an extra pair of hands to carry the box upstairs, but other than that, it’s super easy for you to pass through the additional steps. Because of how neatly rolled the mattress is - and the ease with which the box opens for you - it requires almost zero effort to take it out of the packaging and lay it on your bed.
Is A Bed-in-a-Box Less Durable Than Traditional Mattresses?
This question pops up a lot when people look into buying a mattress in a box. There’s a misconception that these types of mattresses are less durable than traditional ones because they’re rolled up and vacuum-sealed in a box.
On the contrary, a bed-in-a-box will still be as durable as traditional mattresses. They’re made out of high-quality materials (usually a combination of memory foam support coils) to ensure they provide the best night’s sleep possible. In fact, you can easily find some traditional mattresses that are made with worse quality materials and end up being less durable than a mattress in a box.
The bottom line is that you’re not compromising on quality or durability when you buy a boxed mattress. It’s simply a more convenient way of transporting your bed, so you can place it in your bedroom and unpack it without worrying about knocking pictures off your walls or trying to turn a huge mattress around a corner!
Are There Any Differences Between Boxed Mattresses & Traditional Ones?
Aside from the fact that a traditional mattress doesn’t come packaged in a box, the only difference relates to how the mattresses are made. Because a mattress in a box needs to be rolled up for shipping, it’s always constructed out of more pliable materials. As noted above, all boxed mattresses include some element of memory foam. It’s much easier to roll a memory foam mattress straight from the production line - especially as it will naturally expand when the vacuum seal is broken.
Traditional mattresses may include springs, but you’ll never find them in a mattress in a box. It’s not possible to roll up a spring-loaded mattress, so that’s pretty much the main difference between the two.
Why Choose A Mattress In A Box?
Buying a mattress in a box is definitely not a gimmick; it’s an extremely smart choice. Opting for this type of mattress over the traditional versions means you benefit from:
- Cheaper Delivery Rates - It’s far more affordable to ship a mattress in a box because it takes up less space in delivery trucks. This translates to cheaper delivering rates for you, so the entire cost of your bed is less than if you picked a traditional mattress.
- Less Risk Of Damaging Your Home - We’ve all been through the annoyance of trying to drag and lift a huge mattress to the bedroom. You’re bound to scrape it against the walls, and there’s a genuine risk of scraping away paint or damaging decorative items. A bed-in-a-box negates these risks and means you can enjoy a new mattress without harming your home.
- Suitable For Any Property - Some homes have really narrow stairwells and tight corners that make it almost impossible for normal mattress deliveries to work. Even worse, if you live in an apartment complex with a small elevator, then it’s extremely hard to get the mattress into your room. No matter how small or complicated your home is, a mattress in a box is suitable for it.
