4 Signs That Your Mattress is Too Firm

A mattress should be with you for many years if it is properly looked after. But you obviously want a mattress to be as comfortable as possible if you are going to keep it for all that time. Not every mattress is suitable for every person, however, and this is something that you will need to remember if you are keen to have the best night’s sleep you can. In this post, we are going to take you through some of the clear signs that your mattress might be too firm, a common problem that can result in poor quality of sleep. As long as you are aware of these signs and you rectify the problem quickly, you should find that you get much better sleep in no time.

You Wake Up Stiff

If you find yourself waking up in the morning feeling stiff, that can be a sure sign that you are sleeping on a mattress that is too firm. Most commonly, you may experience stiffness in the back of the neck, and you might also have a headache upon waking. If you have either of these symptoms, it probably means that you need to switch to a softer mattress. Of course, there can be other causes of stiffness and of headaches too, so it’s important that you rule those out as well, especially any particular medical issues you might be concerned about. But as long as you do, you should then check your mattress to see if it needs changing.

It’s Hard To Get Comfortable

A mattress should be extremely comfortable - that is what you are hoping for from it, after all. But if you find that you are struggling to get comfortable when you settle down for the night, then you should probably think about whether it’s time to have a new mattress on your bed. In particular, if you are finding yourself tossing and turning as you try to fall asleep, that is probably a sign that you need to change something about the situation. Most likely, the thing you need to change is simply your mattress, and doing so could mean that you are going to be much more comfortable in no time. It’s a great feeling when you are finally able to get comfortable in your own bed at night, so this is something you have to look forward to here.

You Feel More Tired In The Morning

Sometimes you might feel tired in the morning, and it can be due to all sorts of reasons. But if you are starting to actually feel more tired in the morning than when you went to sleep, that is a problem, and it means you need to think about whether your mattress is right or not. Chances are, it is too firm and you are simply never getting comfortable enough to sleep well, as we have seen above. So if you feel more tired in the morning, you should certainly make sure that you are checking this out, even if it is just to rule it out. Once you have a mattress that you are happy with, you are going to start waking up feeling refreshed and active, as you would hope to.

Numbness & Tingling

When you have a really firm mattress, you might even find that you experience some degree of numbness or tingling. You might feel this in the neck, in the arms or legs, any extremities really, or anywhere at all. It can be quite alarming to feel this and you might find yourself worrying about what you should do. But try not to worry: it’s more likely than not that you simply need to swap out your mattress for a firmer one. But pay attention to your body, and try to give it what it needs. If you wake up frequently feeling numb or tingling, then you need to sort that out, and as soon as possible. It can actually be bad for your circulation otherwise, and besides it’s just uncomfortable to sleep like that. This is definitely a sign that should not be ignored.

What To Do If Your Mattress Is Too Firm

So we have seen some of the most common signs that a mattress might be too firm. But if you have noticed one or more of these signs and you want to do something about it, what can you do and what steps can you take to improve the situation? As it happens, it might be simpler and easier than you think. First of all, you might try the simplest option of trying to firm up the mattress by adding more bedding to it. However, if you have a memory foam mattress for example, adding too much bedding might mean that you end up not getting the full benefit of the memory foam, so that is something to think about. Alternatively, you can actually use memory foam to improve the situation, by adding a memory foam topper or pad to the top or bottom of the mattress, respectively. That can make it a lot more comfortable and by playing around with it a little you should be able to get it exactly as firm as you need it to be. But of course, one of the very best things you can do is to simply treat yourself to a new mattress. Sometimes a mattress gets firm over time, and it might be that replacing it fixes the issue. Or you might want to shop around for a less firm option anyway, and opt for that. In either case, you will find that this is a very simple solution to the problem. As you can see, there are many signs to be aware of, and a few things you can do to improve the situation. One thing is for sure: if you have a mattress that is too firm, you don’t need to put up with it, and you should make sure to act as soon as possible to improve the situation.
