Have you ever noticed that you find sleeping in a cool room preferable to sleeping in a warm one? Or have you ever noticed how amazing a cool pillow feels compared to a warm one? If so, then you won’t be surprised to hear that the perfect temperature for a good night’s sleep is between 60° F and 67° F, according to the author of “The Sleep Solution: Why Your Sleep Is Broken and How to Fix It,” Dr. Christopher Winter (BedTimes).
So how does a cooler room impact sleep? Our bodies automatically begin to cool themselves as they prepare for sleep, and by having a cooler environment already, it speeds the sleep process along. This cooling can also bring about the feeling of being tired, which can go a long way in combating insomnia (BedTimes, Heid).
Before you crank down the thermostat, there is one thing to keep in mind. While a cooler room can aid in triggering the desire to sleep, keeping too low of a temperature can result in restless sleep. Knowing what temperature range your body prefers can go a long way in creating more restful nights with deeper sleep, a decrease in insomnia, and a better metabolism (Heid).
So sweet dreams, and remember to keep it cool!
